100 Steps to Success in Maine Coon Breeding
Blog post by DashingCoons · March 23, 2026

Ethical Maine Coon breeding is a serious commitment — one that requires years of learning, significant investment, and an unwavering focus on the health and welfare of every cat in your program. Here are the foundational principles we follow at Dashing Coons.
Foundation: Health Testing
Before breeding any cat, genetic testing through UC Davis or a comparable laboratory is non-negotiable. Test for HCM (A31P mutation), SMA, PKD, and other Maine Coon-relevant conditions. Only breed cats with clear results or known carrier status managed responsibly through pairing.
Selecting Breeding Pairs
Pair for genetic compatibility first, then structure, then coat, then color. Never sacrifice health for aesthetics. Research pedigrees thoroughly — look for diversity to avoid inbreeding, and understand the genetic color outcomes of each pairing before proceeding.
Queen Care During Pregnancy
Provide a high-quality, high-protein diet throughout pregnancy. Set up a quiet, warm nesting area well before the due date. Monitor weight gain and consult your vet regularly. Have an emergency vet contact ready for difficult deliveries.
The Critical Socialization Window
Kittens have a sensitive socialization window from approximately 2–9 weeks. During this time, positive exposure to humans, sounds, textures, and environments shapes their temperament for life. Handle kittens daily from birth. Introduce gentle sounds, different surfaces, and varied human interaction.
Kitten Development Milestones
Track weight daily for the first two weeks. Kittens should gain weight consistently — any plateau or loss requires immediate attention. Eyes open around 10–14 days. Weaning begins around 4 weeks. Litterbox training typically begins around 3–4 weeks.
Veterinary Care
Schedule a vet exam for the litter around 6–8 weeks. Begin the FVRCP vaccine series. Deworm as appropriate. Ensure all kittens are healthy and meeting developmental milestones before placement.
Ethical Placement
Screen families carefully. Ask about their living situation, experience with cats, and plans for veterinary care. Provide a written contract that includes health guarantees, spay/neuter requirements for pet placements, and a return policy. Never place a kitten before 10–12 weeks.
Program Sustainability
Queens need recovery time between litters. Do not breed every cycle. Plan intentional program breaks. Quality over quantity — a smaller number of well-planned litters produces better outcomes than maximizing volume.
