Why Smoke Kittens Look Dark at Birth
Every smoke kitten in our program is born nearly solid black. This surprises some families — but it's exactly how the genetics are supposed to work. The silver undercoat that defines the smoke pattern is hidden beneath the dark tipping at birth and gradually reveals itself over the first 6–12 months. By the time your kitten is a year old, the contrast is breathtaking: deep, dark tips over a shimmering silver base. The transformation is one of the most stunning things about owning a smoke Maine Coon.
The polydactyl trait — extra toes — is a separate genetic marker that has been part of the Maine Coon breed since its origins in New England. Polydactyl paws are large, expressive, and completely healthy. Many families specifically seek out polydactyl kittens for their distinctive look and the breed history they carry.
