European Maine Coon vs. American Maine Coon: What Is the Difference?
Blog post by DashingCoons · June 17, 2026

If you have been researching Maine Coon kittens, you have probably noticed that some look dramatically different from others — even though they are all called "Maine Coons." The reason is a genuine and significant difference in bloodlines: European Maine Coons and American Maine Coons are the same breed, but they have been developed along different aesthetic and structural lines for decades, and the results are visibly distinct.
At Dashing Coons, we specialize exclusively in European Maine Coon bloodlines imported from Russia and Ukraine. Here is a thorough breakdown of what separates the two types — and why it matters when you are choosing a kitten.
A Brief History of the Split
The Maine Coon is America's oldest native cat breed, originating in the northeastern United States. For most of the 20th century, Maine Coon breeding was primarily an American endeavor, shaped by American show standards that emphasized a moderate, balanced look.
When Maine Coons were introduced to Europe — particularly to Russia, Germany, and Scandinavia — European breeders began selecting for more extreme, dramatic features: larger size, wilder appearance, more pronounced facial structure, and more dramatic coat. Over several generations, these lines diverged significantly from their American counterparts, producing what is now commonly called the "European" or "European-style" Maine Coon.
Today, the most visually striking Maine Coons in the world — the ones that look almost like small wildcats — are predominantly from European bloodlines, particularly Russian and Ukrainian catteries that have been refining these traits for 20–30 years.
Physical Differences: Structure and Size
This is where the difference is most obvious. European and American Maine Coons are recognizably the same breed, but they look quite different side by side.
Head shape: European Maine Coons have a more angular, dramatic head with a distinctly square, powerful muzzle, high prominent cheekbones, and a strong chin. The profile is more pronounced and "wild" looking. American Maine Coons tend toward a rounder, softer head with a less extreme muzzle.
Ear furnishings: European lines are known for extraordinarily tall, dramatic ear tufts — the lynx tips that extend well above the ear. American lines have ear tufts too, but they are typically less extreme.
Body size and bone structure: European Maine Coons are generally larger and heavier-boned. Males from top European lines commonly reach 18–25 pounds at full maturity. American Maine Coons are large cats too, but the European lines push the upper limits of the breed's size potential more consistently.
Coat: Both types have the breed's characteristic semi-long, shaggy coat with a ruff, belly fur, and a full plumed tail. European lines often have a slightly denser, more dramatic coat presentation, particularly in the mane and ruff area.
Eyes: European Maine Coons often have larger, more expressive eyes set at a slightly more oblique angle, contributing to their wild, intense expression. Eye color varies in both types — green, gold, copper, and odd-eyed are all possible.
Temperament: Are They Different?
Both European and American Maine Coons share the breed's core temperament traits: dog-like loyalty, high intelligence, playfulness, and strong bonds with their families. Maine Coons of both types are known for following their owners around the house, greeting them at the door, learning their names, and engaging in interactive play well into adulthood.
That said, many breeders and owners of European lines note that European Maine Coons can have a slightly more confident, assertive energy — less timid, more bold. This is likely a result of the selective breeding emphasis on a "wild" appearance also selecting for a more self-assured temperament. Neither type is aggressive; both are affectionate and family-friendly. But if you want a cat with presence — one that commands attention when it walks into a room — European lines tend to deliver that more consistently.
Health: Is One Type Healthier?
Both types are subject to the same Maine Coon-specific health concerns, primarily HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). The key variable is not European vs. American — it is whether the breeder health-tests their cats.
Responsible breeders of both types test their breeding cats through accredited genetic labs like UC Davis. Irresponsible breeders of both types do not. When evaluating a breeder, always ask for health testing documentation regardless of whether they breed European or American lines.
At Dashing Coons, all of our breeding cats are tested through UC Davis for HCM, SMA, PKD, and other relevant conditions. We share those results with every family before they commit.
Price: What to Expect
European Maine Coon kittens from reputable, health-testing catteries typically command a premium over American-style Maine Coons. This reflects the cost of importing bloodlines from Europe, the rarity of top-quality European lines in the United States, and the demand for the more dramatic look.
At Dashing Coons, our kittens start at $3,500. Final price depends on the individual kitten — traits, sex, coat, and whether breeding rights are included all factor in. This reflects our European bloodlines, UC Davis health testing, TICA registration, in-home socialization, full veterinary care before placement, and the ongoing support we provide to every family.
Which Type Is Right for You?
If you want a large, affectionate, family-friendly cat with a moderate, classic Maine Coon look — either type will serve you well. If you want the most dramatic, visually striking Maine Coon possible — the kind that stops people in their tracks and genuinely looks like a small wildcat — European bloodlines are what you are looking for.
Both types are wonderful companions. The "right" choice comes down to what you are drawn to aesthetically and what is available from a reputable, health-testing breeder near you.
