Essential Care Tips for Your Maine Coon

Maine Coon cat being groomed

Maine Coons are one of the most rewarding cat breeds to own — but their size, coat, and personality mean they have some specific care needs. Here's what every Maine Coon owner should know.

Grooming

Maine Coons have a semi-long, silky coat that requires regular brushing — ideally 2–3 times per week. Their undercoat can mat if neglected, especially behind the ears, under the arms, and around the collar area. Use a wide-tooth comb or slicker brush and work gently from the ends up to the roots.

Bathing is rarely necessary but can be done every few months if your cat tolerates it. Maine Coons are known for their love of water, so many take to baths surprisingly well.

Nutrition

Feed a high-protein diet appropriate for a large breed cat. Maine Coons are slow to mature — they don't reach full size until 3–5 years — so kitten food or "all life stages" formulas are appropriate for the first few years. Look for named meat proteins (chicken, turkey, salmon) as the first ingredient.

Wet food is strongly recommended for kidney and urinary health. Supplement with dry food if desired, but make sure fresh water is always available — ideally from a filtered fountain.

Dental Health

Maine Coons are prone to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Brush teeth regularly with a cat-safe toothpaste, or use a VOHC-certified dental supplement like Plaque Off sprinkled on food. Annual dental cleanings at your vet are also recommended.

Enrichment & Exercise

Maine Coons are active, intelligent cats that need mental and physical stimulation. Provide tall cat trees, interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and regular play sessions. Many Maine Coons enjoy fetch, leash walks, and even learning tricks. Without adequate enrichment, they can become bored and destructive.

Veterinary Care

Schedule annual wellness exams and keep vaccinations current. Maine Coons are predisposed to HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), so cardiac screening via echocardiogram is recommended starting around age 2. Ask your vet about HCM screening protocols for large breeds.

Litter Box

Standard litter boxes are too small for adult Maine Coons. Use a large, uncovered box — we recommend a 40-gallon rubber storage tub — and scoop daily. Unscented clumping litter is gentler on their sensitive respiratory systems.
