Covering Bad Smells & Harmful Scents for Maine Coons

Blog post by DashingCoons · March 23, 2026

Maine Coon in a safe home environment

Cats have a significantly more sensitive sense of smell than humans — and their liver lacks certain enzymes that allow them to metabolize many compounds that are harmless to us. This makes scent safety a critical topic for every cat owner.

Essential Oils to Avoid

Many essential oils are toxic to cats, even in small amounts. The most dangerous include: tea tree (melaleuca), eucalyptus, peppermint, clove, cinnamon, citrus oils (lemon, orange, lime), pine, wintergreen, and ylang ylang. Diffusing these oils in your home can cause respiratory distress, liver damage, and neurological symptoms in cats.

Scented Candles & Air Fresheners

Paraffin candles release toxic compounds when burned, including benzene and toluene. Plug-in air fresheners and aerosol sprays can irritate the respiratory tract. If you use candles, opt for unscented beeswax or soy candles. Avoid plug-in fresheners entirely in rooms where your cat spends time.

Cleaning Products

Many common cleaning products are dangerous to cats. Phenol-based cleaners (Pine-Sol, Lysol) are particularly toxic. Bleach, ammonia, and formaldehyde-releasing products should be used with extreme caution — ensure surfaces are fully dry and ventilated before allowing cats back in the area.

Litter Considerations

Scented litter is a common culprit for respiratory irritation in cats. Many cats will avoid a scented litter box entirely, leading to elimination problems. We always recommend unscented, low-dust clumping litter. The scent masking is for the human's benefit — cats don't appreciate it.

Safer Alternatives

For odor control: baking soda, activated charcoal, and regular cleaning are far safer than chemical air fresheners. For cleaning: diluted white vinegar, castile soap, and enzyme-based cleaners are generally cat-safe when used as directed. For ambiance: unscented candles, diffusing cat-safe herbs like valerian or catnip, or simply opening windows.

Signs of Scent Toxicity

Watch for: excessive drooling, squinting or pawing at the face, difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, or tremors. If you suspect scent exposure, move your cat to fresh air immediately and contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
