Maine Coon Breeding Rights: What They Are, What They Cost, and Who Should Get Them
Blog post by DashingCoons · July 10, 2026

If you have been researching Maine Coon kittens, you have probably seen the phrase "breeding rights" and wondered what it means. It is one of the most misunderstood aspects of buying a purebred cat, and it is worth understanding clearly before you start talking to breeders.
What Breeding Rights Actually Mean
When you buy a Maine Coon kitten, you are typically buying a pet — a companion animal that will be spayed or neutered and live as a family member. This is called a "pet placement" or "pet quality" sale, and it comes with a contract that requires you to spay or neuter the kitten.
Breeding rights are an additional purchase that allows you to use the cat for breeding purposes — to produce and sell kittens. Without breeding rights, you are contractually prohibited from breeding the cat, and the TICA registration will be issued on a non-breeding basis.
Breeding rights are not just a formality. They represent a significant transfer of responsibility. When you have breeding rights, you are taking on the obligation to breed responsibly — health testing, proper care of queens and kittens, ethical placement of offspring.
Why Breeders Charge More for Breeding Rights
The price difference between a pet placement and a breeding rights placement reflects several things: the additional value of the cat as a breeding animal, the breeder's investment in producing a cat with the genetics and structure suitable for breeding, and the responsibility the breeder takes on by releasing a cat into the breeding population.
A reputable breeder does not sell breeding rights to just anyone. They want to know that the buyer understands responsible breeding practices, has the resources to do it properly, and is committed to the health and welfare of the cats and kittens they produce.
What Is Included With Breeding Rights at Dashing Coons
At Dashing Coons, breeding rights placements include the full genetic panel (UC Davis testing results), TICA registration on a breeding basis, documented pedigree, and our ongoing support as you start your breeding program. We are genuinely invested in the success of the breeders we place cats with — their success reflects on our bloodlines.
We are selective about breeding rights placements. We want to know about your plans, your setup, and your commitment to health testing and responsible breeding before we agree to a breeding rights sale.
Do You Need Breeding Rights?
If you are buying a Maine Coon as a family companion, you do not need breeding rights. The vast majority of our placements are pet placements, and there is nothing lesser about a pet placement — these cats are just as loved, just as beautiful, and just as much a part of the family.
If you are genuinely interested in starting a cattery or adding to an existing breeding program, breeding rights are the right path. We encourage you to be honest with yourself about your readiness — responsible breeding is a significant commitment of time, money, and emotional energy.
If you are interested in breeding rights, reach out to us and tell us about your plans. We are happy to have that conversation and help you figure out if it is the right path for you.
