One of the great gifts of owning a Maine Coon is how long they live. With proper care, Maine Coons routinely reach 15 to 18 years — some even longer. That is a long, rich relationship. But it also means that at some point, your magnificent, energetic cat will become a senior, and the care they need will change.

Here is what to expect as your Maine Coon ages, and how to give them the best possible quality of life in their senior years.

When Is a Maine Coon Considered Senior?

Because Maine Coons mature slowly — they do not reach full physical maturity until age 3 to 5 — they also tend to age more gracefully than smaller breeds. Most Maine Coons are not considered senior until around age 10 to 11, and many remain active and playful well into their teens.

The transition to senior status is gradual. You will notice subtle changes before you notice dramatic ones — slightly less energy, a preference for lower sleeping spots, a bit more time spent resting. These are normal and expected.

Health Issues to Watch For

Kidney disease: Chronic kidney disease is the leading cause of death in senior cats of all breeds. Signs include increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, and decreased appetite. Annual bloodwork after age 7 can catch kidney disease early, when it is most manageable.

HCM: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can develop or progress in senior cats even if they tested clear for the genetic mutation. Annual cardiac screenings are worth considering for Maine Coons over 8 years old.

Arthritis: Large cats are prone to joint issues as they age. Signs include reluctance to jump, stiffness after rest, and changes in grooming habits (difficulty reaching certain areas). Low-sided litter boxes, ramps instead of stairs, and joint supplements can all help.

Hyperthyroidism: Common in cats over 10, hyperthyroidism causes weight loss despite a good appetite, increased vocalization, and hyperactivity. It is very treatable once diagnosed.

Dental disease: Dental issues are extremely common in senior cats and often go unnoticed until they are severe. Annual dental exams and cleanings under anesthesia are the standard of care.

Adjusting Care for a Senior Maine Coon

Vet visits: Move from annual to twice-yearly wellness exams. Senior cats benefit from more frequent bloodwork and monitoring.

Diet: Senior cats often need more protein, not less — the old advice about low-protein diets for senior cats has been largely revised. Talk to your vet about the best diet for your specific cat's health status.

Hydration: Kidney health depends on hydration. A cat fountain, wet food, and regular monitoring of water intake become even more important in senior years.

Comfort: Heated beds, orthopedic sleeping surfaces, and easy access to favorite spots (ramps, steps) make a significant difference in quality of life for a cat with arthritis or joint stiffness.

The Gift of the Senior Years

There is something deeply special about a senior Maine Coon. The kitten energy has settled into something quieter and more profound — a deep, comfortable bond built over years of shared life. Senior cats are often more affectionate, more settled, and more attuned to their people than they were as young adults.

The investment you make in their health and comfort during these years is one of the most meaningful things you can do for an animal that has given you so much. It is worth every bit of it.
