Traveling With a Maine Coon: Tips for Stress-Free Car Trips and Vet Visits

Dashing Coons Maine Coon

Maine Coons have a reputation for being adaptable, curious, and less anxious than many cat breeds — and in our experience, that reputation is earned. With the right preparation, Maine Coons can be genuinely good travelers. But "good traveler" does not happen automatically. It is built through early exposure and smart preparation.

Start Early: Carrier Training From Kittenhood

The single most important thing you can do to make travel easier is to make the carrier a normal, positive part of your kitten's life from day one. Most cats only see the carrier when something stressful is about to happen — which is why they run and hide the moment it comes out.

Instead, leave the carrier out in your home with the door open. Put a soft blanket inside that smells like you. Feed treats inside it. Let your kitten explore it on its own terms. When the carrier is just another piece of furniture, the stress response disappears.

Car Trip Basics

For short trips — vet visits, errands — a well-carrier-trained Maine Coon will typically settle within a few minutes of the car moving. The motion and white noise of the car is actually calming for many cats.

Cover the carrier with a light blanket to reduce visual stimulation. Play calm music or use a white noise app. Keep the car temperature comfortable — Maine Coons have thick coats and can overheat in a hot car quickly.

Never let your cat loose in the car. A loose cat in a moving vehicle is a safety hazard for both the cat and the driver.

Longer Trips and Road Travel

For longer trips — several hours or more — plan for rest stops where you can offer water and a litter box opportunity. A travel litter box that fits in the carrier or a small pop-up litter box for rest stops is worth having.

Most Maine Coons will settle into a long car trip surprisingly well, especially if they have been exposed to car travel from a young age. We personally travel with every kitten we deliver, and we have found that Maine Coons are among the most adaptable cats for travel.

Making Vet Visits Less Stressful

Vet visits are the most common travel scenario for most cats. Beyond carrier training, a few things help: call ahead and ask for a "cat-friendly" or "fear-free" appointment time when the waiting room is less busy, bring a familiar blanket or toy, and ask your vet about pre-visit calming options (Feliway spray, gabapentin for very anxious cats) if your cat is particularly stressed.

Maine Coons are generally more stoic at the vet than many breeds — their confident temperament means they are less likely to panic. But every cat is an individual, and some Maine Coons are more anxious than others.
