Breed Comparison
Maine Coon vs Ragdoll: Which Large Cat Breed Is Right for Your Family?
Blog post by DashingCoons · July 10, 2026

If you are researching large, gentle cat breeds, you have almost certainly landed on both Maine Coons and Ragdolls. They are the two most popular large cat breeds in the United States, and they share some important traits — both are big, both are gentle, both are good with families. But they are also genuinely different in ways that matter for choosing the right fit.
We are Maine Coon breeders, so we obviously have a perspective here. But we are going to give you the honest comparison, including the things that make Ragdolls a better choice for some families.
Size
Both breeds are large, but Maine Coons are generally bigger. Adult male Maine Coons typically weigh 15 to 25 pounds. Adult male Ragdolls typically weigh 15 to 20 pounds. The difference is not dramatic, but Maine Coons — especially European-line males — tend to have heavier bone structure and a more imposing physical presence.
Both breeds are significantly larger than the average domestic cat, and both will surprise people who are not used to large cats.
Temperament
This is where the real differences emerge. Ragdolls are famously docile — they go limp when picked up (hence the name), they are extremely calm, and they tend to be less active and less demanding than Maine Coons. They are the ultimate lap cats.
Maine Coons are more active, more curious, and more engaged. They follow you around, they want to be involved in everything, they play well into adulthood. They are less likely to just sit on your lap for hours — they want to be near you, but they also want to be doing something.
If you want a calm, relaxed companion who will sit with you all evening, a Ragdoll might be the better fit. If you want an interactive, playful, dog-like companion who will be your shadow, a Maine Coon is the choice.
Intelligence and Trainability
Maine Coons are generally considered more intelligent and more trainable than Ragdolls. They can learn tricks, walk on a leash, play fetch, and respond to their names reliably. Their curiosity and problem-solving ability is one of the things that makes them so entertaining to live with.
Ragdolls are smart but less driven by curiosity and exploration. They are content to observe rather than investigate.
Coat and Grooming
Both breeds have long, luxurious coats that require regular grooming. Maine Coon coats tend to be denser and more textured, with a distinctive mane and ear tufts. Ragdoll coats are silkier and less prone to matting.
For smoke-coated Maine Coons specifically, the coat development over the first two years is one of the most dramatic and beautiful things in the cat world — something Ragdolls simply do not offer.
Health
Both breeds have genetic health considerations. Maine Coons are prone to HCM and SMA. Ragdolls are also prone to HCM, as well as polycystic kidney disease. Both breeds benefit from genetic testing in their breeding programs.

The Bottom Line
Choose a Ragdoll if: you want a very calm, docile lap cat, you prefer a less active companion, or you have a very quiet household.
Choose a Maine Coon if: you want an interactive, engaged companion, you enjoy a cat with a strong personality, you have kids or dogs, or you want the most visually dramatic cat in the room.
