Maine Coons With Dogs and Kids: The Honest Truth About How It Actually Goes
Blog post by DashingCoons · July 10, 2026

The most common question we get from families considering a Maine Coon is some version of: "We have a dog and two kids — will this work?" The short answer is yes, Maine Coons are genuinely one of the best cat breeds for families with dogs and children. But the longer answer is more nuanced, and it is worth understanding what actually makes it work.
Why Maine Coons Tend to Do Well With Dogs
Maine Coons are not typical cats. They do not have the same territorial, aloof independence that makes many cat breeds incompatible with dogs. Maine Coons are curious, social, and confident — and those traits translate well into multi-pet households.
A Maine Coon that has been properly socialized from kittenhood will typically approach a dog with curiosity rather than fear. They are large enough that they do not feel threatened by most dogs, and their confident temperament means they are less likely to trigger a dog's prey drive by running away.
That said, the dog matters as much as the cat. A high-prey-drive dog that has never lived with cats is a different situation than a calm, cat-experienced dog. The introduction process matters enormously.
How to Introduce a Maine Coon Kitten to a Dog
The key is controlled, gradual introduction. Do not just put the kitten in the room with the dog and hope for the best. Here is a process that works:
Week 1 — Scent introduction: Keep the kitten in a separate room. Swap bedding between the kitten and the dog so they can smell each other without direct contact. Feed both animals near the closed door so they associate each other's scent with something positive.
Week 2 — Visual introduction: Allow brief, supervised visual contact through a baby gate or cracked door. Watch both animals' body language. The kitten should be curious or neutral. The dog should be calm or mildly interested — not fixated or frantic.
Week 3 and beyond — Supervised together time: Allow them in the same space with the dog on a leash. Reward calm behavior from the dog. Let the kitten set the pace for how close it gets. Never force interaction.
Most Maine Coon kittens and dogs reach a comfortable coexistence within a few weeks. Many become genuine companions — sleeping together, grooming each other, playing together. It is one of the most heartwarming things to watch.
Maine Coons and Young Children
Maine Coons are patient, tolerant, and gentle — which makes them well-suited to households with young children. They are large enough to handle being picked up and carried (though they should always be taught to tolerate this, not forced to endure it), and their temperament is generally calm and even.
The most important factor is teaching children how to interact with the cat. Even the most patient Maine Coon has limits, and a child who pulls tails, squeezes too hard, or does not respect the cat's signals will eventually get scratched — not because the cat is mean, but because the child did not listen.
Teach children to: approach calmly, let the cat sniff their hand first, pet gently along the back (not the belly), and stop when the cat walks away. These are simple rules that make a huge difference.
The Socialization Factor
A lot of how well a Maine Coon does with dogs and children comes down to how it was raised. Kittens that are exposed to children, dogs, and household noise from a young age are dramatically more adaptable than kittens raised in isolation.
At Dashing Coons, our kittens are raised in our home — not in a separate cattery building. They hear the dishwasher, the vacuum cleaner, the television, and the sounds of a busy household from the day they are born. They are handled daily by multiple people. This early socialization is one of the most valuable things we can give them before they go to their new homes.
