What we test for, where things stand, and how to request records.
DNA Screening
Every breeding cat at Dashing Coons is DNA-screened through UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) and Optimal Selection. The panel covers the four mutations most relevant to Maine Coons:
- HCM (MYBPC3 A31P) — the Maine Coon-specific hypertrophic cardiomyopathy mutation
- SMA — spinal muscular atrophy
- PKDef — pyruvate kinase deficiency
- PKD — polycystic kidney disease
Current panels are being refreshed as part of our 2026 start-fresh health program. Dated reports are shared with serious buyers on request — just reach out and I'll send them over.
Important note on the HCM DNA test
The A31P DNA test only detects that one specific mutation. It does not rule out all forms of HCM. A cat can test DNA-clear and still develop HCM from a different mutation or from non-genetic causes. That's why a cardiologist echocardiogram is the more complete screening — and why I'm working toward adding it. DNA testing is a meaningful piece of the picture, not the whole picture.
Cardiologist Echo (HCM) — In Progress
I'm in the process of scheduling cardiologist echocardiograms for my breeding cats. This is the gold-standard screening for HCM — performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist, not a general vet. I haven't completed these yet, and I won't claim otherwise. Once they're done, I'll post the results here and share them with buyers on request.
Hip Evaluation — In Progress
Official hip screening (OFA or PawPeds) is also in progress. Maine Coons can be prone to hip dysplasia, and I want to screen for it properly. I'll update this page when I have results.
