How Big Do Maine Coons Actually Get? The Truth About Size, Weight, and Growth
Blog post by DashingCoons · July 10, 2026

Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed in the world. That is not marketing — it is a biological fact. But the internet is full of wildly exaggerated claims about Maine Coon size, and a lot of buyers come to us with unrealistic expectations in both directions. Some expect a cat the size of a small dog. Others are surprised when their kitten grows into a genuinely massive animal.
Here is the real data, with honest context about what affects how large your Maine Coon will actually be.
Typical Adult Weight Ranges
Adult male Maine Coons typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. Large males from European bloodlines can reach 20 to 25 pounds. Adult females are smaller, typically 8 to 14 pounds, with large females reaching 15 to 16 pounds.
These are healthy, lean weights — not overweight cats. A Maine Coon at 18 pounds should look athletic and muscular, not round. If your Maine Coon is 18 pounds and looks like a furry basketball, it is overweight, not impressively large.
The viral photos of Maine Coons that look the size of small dogs are usually a combination of genuinely large cats, camera angles, and sometimes misleading context. Real Maine Coons are impressively large — but they are still cats, not small dogs.
The Growth Timeline
Maine Coons grow slowly. This is one of the most important things to understand about the breed. While most domestic cats reach their adult size by 12 months, Maine Coons continue growing until they are three to five years old.
At 12 months, your Maine Coon will look like a large cat. At 24 months, it will look significantly bigger. At 36 to 48 months, it will reach its full adult size and coat development. The slow growth is part of what makes Maine Coons so special — you get to watch your cat become more magnificent every year for the first four or five years of its life.

What Affects How Large Your Maine Coon Will Be
Genetics: The single biggest factor. A kitten from two large parents with large grandparents is likely to be large. Ask your breeder about the size of the parent cats and their lineage.
Sex: Males are significantly larger than females in this breed. If maximum size is your goal, a male is the better choice.
Bloodlines: European-line Maine Coons tend to be larger and heavier-boned than American-line cats. If you want the most impressive size, look for documented European pedigrees.
Nutrition: Proper nutrition during the growth years matters. High-quality, protein-rich food supports healthy muscle development. Cheap, carbohydrate-heavy kibble does not.
Neutering timing: Early neutering (before 6 months) can affect bone development and may result in a slightly taller, longer cat because the growth plates close later. This is a nuanced topic worth discussing with your vet.
European vs American Size Differences
European-line Maine Coons are generally larger, heavier-boned, and more dramatically structured than American-line cats. The European breeding standard emphasizes size, bone density, and the wild, lion-like appearance that makes Maine Coons so striking.
At Dashing Coons, our breeding cats are from European bloodlines, and our males consistently reach 18 to 22 pounds at full maturity. Our females are typically 12 to 15 pounds. These are genuinely large cats — not exaggerated for marketing purposes.
